Pete's Pics > Samana, Dominican Republic

image

Samana does not have a large dock and cruise ships have to anchor about a mile and a half offshore where the water is 30 feet deep or more. Some of the lifeboats are then lowered and punters are tendered to town

image

Here, a regal photographer impatiently waits for her ship to come in

image

Then, in no time at all, we were onshore ready to explore

image

Various modes of transport were available for hire. This peppy little nag looked a little feisty for us so we chose to walk

image

Retail in Samana is what you make it. Numerous peddlers lined the road to town, many of them kids selling sea-shells, shoe-shines and questionable beverages

image

Another retail approach mixing modern and traditional

image

The banana vendors were asleep in the cab - not that we ever saw much of a line form

image

Works of art abounded along the shoreline. These were priceless, i.e. no price marked - and were open to just about any offer

image

Don't you wish you had one of these treasures?

image

A first impression of the town is this facade of cute buildings. Actually, not much to do with Samana, these are cruise ship related sales outlets for diamonds and other gems

image

Every port has its complement of "bargain" outlets to which the guileless inmates are steered, some of them in a much less subtle manner than this

image

And, for those suffering from gambling deprivation, there is even a casino

image

A block into town the scene changes. Popular transportation is the ubiquitous scooter, some with as many as three people on board

image

Next door to the cafe is a vacant lot that makes a handy trash dump, complete with scavenging dog. There were dozens of dogs roaming around town on similar missions

image

A hundred yards along the street is the next informal trash dump - quite a zesty pile in the 90 degree temperatures

image

An interesting piece of architecture in the schizophrenic style

image

image

Bureaucracy at its finest. The Secretary of State for the Environment and Natural Resources looks like a force to be reckoned with

image

On the main highway through town - actually THE highway through town - stands the Police Station outside of which is the gnarliest speed bump ever seen

image

Home of Samana's finest

image

One of several medical centers around town

image

Suburban retail

image

This place seemed to sell almost everything

image

The fire department are quick to respond if they don't get stuck in the mud or break an axle on the way out

image

What goes on here, stays here

image

Larger vehicles, like this battered bus, were mostly equipped with frontal armor

image

Mesh to protect headlights and a "cowcatcher" to fend off animals. Out of town roads are probably a little rustic

image

More colorful residences with every entry point heavily decorated with ironmongery

image

A scooter repair facility

image

Scooters are worked hard - this rickshaw type of arrangement was pretty popular with cruise patrons

image

Here, an impromptu scooter taxi repair station seems to have sprung up

image

Yea, Dobbin and his entourage finally snagged a fare

image

Le Bijou specialized in watches of best Flea Market quality and similar warranties

image

Another unusual, mixed use building with a style of its own

image

Many minimalist retail establishments were little more than a room opening directly onto the street such as this convenience store...

image

...this cafe...

image

...and this beauty parlor

image

Daihatsu trucks are very common. This one was participating in a ramshackle street market

image

It was difficult to determine who was part of the show and who was just along for the ride

image

More casual living in the Dominican Republic. Notice the guys hanging out on the roof at the right

image

A popular take-out restaurant with suspect sign

image

The hardware store was having a total liquidation sale. Probably none too soon

image

This truck, complete with flat tire and collapsed seat, was delivered to the auto repair shop for service

image

Urban scene

image

The suburbs along with three stray dogs

image

The main highway where it enters town on the north side

image

Although we never found a school, there must be one somewhere

image

Chickens roamed around freely in all of the cities we visited. This one was thinking about crossing the road...

image

...then thought better of it

image

On the main street, another example of home security

image

Another medical center, this specializing in gynecology and pediatrics

image

Back at the ocean, a reassuring glance at the little harbor restores the notion that the Caribbean is, after all, a beautiful place

image

Our temporary home is patiently waiting just outside the inlet - but then -

image

we discovered the beach

image

What a foul mess. It seems that there is no provision for clean-up and we realized why a cruise line tour to an island of beautiful beaches, had been so heavily promoted

image

Also seen around town. This young lady on her way somewhere

image

A young man not going anywhere

image

A mom suffering the tonsorial devotions of a daughter

image

And a couple of kids just hanging out
