Life itself, like the A-62 freeway, seems to have bypassed this farming community of 1600 souls

image

Even in a tiny town like Alaejos, burglar bars are apparently required on the local high school

image

Wandering through town, the mix of architecture and even property age was striking and every piece of land had been built on

image

Despite a refurbished front wall, the roof of this house had collapsed revealing the rustic timbers used in its construction

image

Homing in on the highest of the two towers - this one turned out to be St Mary's Church

image

The church forms one side of the main square

image

Detail of the top of the tower

image

Detail of tower about 40 feet up. Looking at this, we decided not to enter the building which is in an earthquake zone

image

Some refurbishment has been accomplished. The town was declared a "Heritage Foundation" site in 1980 and presumably receives external funding for such projects

image

Right off the square is a street of vacated houses scheduled for renovation

image

This building, on the square, is partway through the process

image

We wandered now to the other end of town to inspect the second towered building. The mixture of buildings along the way was amazing

image

With no attempt at concealment, as new services have been introduced to the town - electricity, phone, cable TV and so on - they are simply stapled across the front of the buildings and dropped off wherever needed

image

Here is the second large church, presumably built at a time when agriculture was king and Alaejos was prospering

image

A grand bell tower and large cupola over the altar. Pretty fancy for a town of 1600

image

This detail of the tower reveals that some maintenance is overdue here as well

image

A long time Alaejos resident, this lady appeared to be on a shopping mission although we never actually saw a grocery store

image

We did find a furniture store however, and got a sneak preview of what the best rural Spanish homes are sporting this year

image

These high-schoolers were roaming around town and brought to seven the total number of people we actually saw in a couple of hours out and about

image

Eight, if you include this little fellow
