Watching this go past the window was more temptation than we could bear. After a few false starts we found the narrow hair-raising roadway to the top and duly checked it out

Originally a Roman fort was built here to guard the adjacent salt mine. The current structure is a fortified 9th century enclosure which also contains a the 2nd century Minyona tower and an 11th century church

From the ramparts of the castle, the incumbents had a good view of potential attackers. It is estimated that a further 500 billion tons of salt remain in the mine

The castle dominates this section of the Cardoner river valley. It was decreed that the local population could have salt every Thursday in return for one days work a week maintaining the fortifications

I managed to trick Marian into this sentry post by telling her that her cheese sandwich was inside

All efforts to get her into the other lookout failed - what a wuss!
