Panorama from the island in the Loire

The chateau is an imposing sight and pretty much dominates the urban landscape. First constructed in the 10th century to fend off the Normans, it was destroyed in 1067

King Henry II of England rebuilt it toward the end of the 12th century. The chateau then changed hands several times, subsequently becoming an army barracks and then a state prison under Napolean

The 15th century Town Hall faces onto the river. There are numerous other attractive building around the town from the same period

In the early 20th century, the chateau was acquired by the city of Saumur. Following renovations the building now houses both a decorative arts museum and a horse museum. To the right is the spire of Saint Pierre
