On the south side of Calais lies this stark looking church. The journey to Saint Omer was studded with unattractive belfrys and clock towers that had one attention grabbing attribute - be large!

The 15th century Saint Bertin Abbey ruins in Saint Omer. Latterly designated a park area, the structure is nowadays maintained

The Saint Sepulcre Church, in the heart of the city, however, is in dangerous dis-repair

From a distance, all appears well...

The closer one looks, the more damage and deterioration becomes apparent

In addition to broken windows there is evidence of falling masonry

This was one of numerous churches that we would not have entered even if they had been accessible

After leaving Saint Omer we came across this Transylvanian transgression that entirely dominated the city center

What were they thinking of?

The town square reflects the overpowering style of the ugly church
